Oscar Nominated Documentary "13th"

Released in 2016, but resurfacing as a compelling film in this current political climate, the Oscar nominated documentary, 13th, directed by Ava DuVernay, and currently available on Netflix, is a must-see. DuVernay’s film shows that although the 13th Amendment, best known for abolishing slavery and involuntary servitude except as a punishment for the conviction of a crime, has also been responsible for the suppression of African Americans and the inordinate high prison population of today. 13th features interviews from many notable activists, including attorney Bryan Stevenson, the subject of another great film Just Mercy.
